Protect your child’s smile from decay with help from dental sealants.
All you have to do is look at your child’s molars and you’ll immediately see that there are many little grooves and crannies that food and bacteria can easily get trapped, leading to cavities. Luckily, our Redford area family dentist Dr. Laurie Mulka at Mulka Dental offers a simple solution that can seal those pitted chewing surfaces of your child’s back teeth to prevent decay.
What are dental sealants?
Sealants are clear, plastic coatings that are painted over the chewing surfaces of your child’s molars to seal grooves and fissures in the teeth to prevent bacteria and food from getting trapped. Sealants act as barriers to reduce the risk of cavities. The sooner your child gets sealants after their molars have come in, the better.
How are sealants placed?
Getting sealants is easy, quick, and completely painless. In fact, our dentist can even place sealants during your child’s next dental cleaning, so you don’t have to schedule a separate appointment. Once your child’s teeth have been cleaned, to remove any plaque or tartar buildup, Dr. Mulka will apply a solution over the chewing surfaces of their back teeth.
This solution will roughen the surface, so the plastic sealant sticks to the tooth. The solution is rinsed off and dried. Then, we will paint on the sealant and harden it permanently to the tooth with a dental light. It’s that simple!
How long do dental sealants last?
With the proper care and with regular visits to Mulka Dental, your child’s sealants could last several years before needing to be reapplied or replaced. Coming in every six months for checkups will ensure that broken sealants or sealants that have fallen out are replaced as soon as possible.
When should my child get dental sealants?
Once your child’s first set of molars comes in, usually around the age of 6 or 7, then it’s time to schedule a consultation to find out if they could benefit from sealants. When your child’s second set of molars comes in, usually by the time they reach 12 years old, then it’s time to come back in to have sealants placed once more.
If your child’s molars are beginning to come in, then it’s time to call (248) 482-7020 to find out whether they could benefit from dental sealants from Dr. Mulka at Mulka Dental in Livonia, Michigan and serving Redford. Preserve your child’s beautiful smile and ward off decay.
